I decided to study this position a bit more, with XGR+. The first thing I did was to verify that it was ND before the roll. Then I tried switching to a money game. For money, it seems that 16/13 7/6 is clearly best; if this fact stands up to a rollout, then it increases my mystification. I would not have expected the right play here to depend sensitively on the score. Then, as I suggested in my other post, I tried shifting Blue's home-board gap deeper. This again tends to push 16/13 7/6 to the top. I'm not sure how much more time I want to spend on this position, but these variants indicate to me that 16/13 7/6 is the "natural" move here and that some unusual factors are conspiring to make 16/15 7/4 float to the top.
