I used to split to the 21 too.

I think you want to split to the 22 because the opener is going to hit loose (likely), and after the sequence split, hit, miss, cover, you are much less unhappy if your opponent makes the 3 than the 4.

Also, after the loose hit: If you get hit on the 3, then 2s, 3s and 4s will be OK (hit, hit, slot the 21); if you get hit on the 4, then 3s and 4s are OK (hit), but 2s don't do much.
