It is a bug and until recently I was not able to reproduce this. It appears that this bug only exists on the Windows version (I usually run GNUBG on other system that don't exhibit this behavior) and may be related to how the windows version displays update information in the popup box.

I do not know of a work around, but I am curious. When this happens are you able to click the little "stop sign" symbol down in the bottom right of the GNUBG window (to the right of the GNUBG ID). I'd be curious if you are able to click it and whether you are able to continue?
