Cube Action?

In short it's not a double because you don't have enough timing to win this game an ample amount of the time to make it a cube. The easiest way to see what how this position goes down is to play it out as many games as it takes for you to realize just how often you don't escape your back checkers. Another thing worthy of note is that you should know your opponent loses only ~2% gammons from this position and that you lose more easily.
You might ask yourself on average how many rolls it takes you escape one checker from behind a 5 prime. (I think it's just over 3 and to escape both from behind a 5 prime it's 6 rolls) After that knowing your average roll excluding sixes is ~7.2 imagine how the position unfolds. If you give yourself two sevens for example and then a 63 you'll reach the position below where you now have a double and take. In the initial position there's just too much work still to do with both stuck back there.
