Thoughts on the World Championship

The players listed on the Giants 32 list are not an accurate estimate of the top 32 players in the world. I don't think many would disagree with this sentiment. Just an aside, I know what you meant...
I am with you hating that Monte Carlo is as you're trying to say "just another tournament". I don't mind so much that anyone can enter or that anyone can win. There are pluses and minuses to both sides of this I think. What I think may be bothering you though I'm only guessing is the tournament structure and how this setup still leaves so much luck in the game to determine the 'World Champion'. Even if it isn't how you feel it is how I feel. It makes me pretty sick because being the world champion of other games/sports (almost?) always means that you're at the top of your chosen profession. It doesn't mean you're necessarily the best, but it does mean you're the creme of the crop. In backgammon due to the nature of the game and the structure of the tournament any donkey can and does at times win.
If you look at former winners there are some players I know were at least great players in their time there like Mochy, Trabi, Mads, Granstedt, Grandell, etc... There are I'm sure also some real powder puffs in there. I wasn't around to know how weak some of these players were but at least a few of them on there I know were never considered more than mediocre.
I would prefer a change in the structure of the event and how it is run given a complete overhaul. I don't think I've ever kept it secret that I'd love to see it leave Monaco either. I am not a TD, I don't have the experience or the answers but like David I feel how it is sucks. There are many things I know I'd like to see implemented or attempted from all matches being clocked to a different format. In my dream world the entire year before the World Championships there would be qualifiers held somewhere online that would fill and once filled the tournament would begin and the winner be entered automatically into the World Championships. They would not be able to get a cashout, it would have to be used to enter the tournament. (unless they won/qualified multiple times) You could even have it set up so that the entry fee to the qualifiers was so much as to help coverage your average cost of flight and hotel if you wanted to go all out. A diligent committee would have to be set up to monitor these matches since they're big money and being run online but I think it would be feasible.
Another thing I'd love to see is what the USBGF is attempting this year. More live coverage of matches where those interested enough in bg that were unable to attend the event could pay a modest fee and watch some live matches with running commentary by other experts. If this had been set up, tested, and all the details worked out in advance it could have been so much more than we were able to offer this year. This year is a test run at it as I see it kind of tossed together near the 9th hour and we will learn from it and hopefully build on it to offer something much better next year. I'm going to cut myself off before I really start to ramble ;)
