Playing online you are often at the mercy of the software, so that can be an issue. Over the board it can be an easier thing to deal with.

I have played in events where they prefer the logs be sent in. I have had the situation you describe happen, and at the end I have manually spliced a couple logs together. I wanted to point out that although this is "tampering", I see nothing wrong in doing this to overcome the shortfalls of any given software. I will often get requests/email to hack logs together for this purpose.
However for those that are not so tech savvy I would not expect them to go to great lengths to do so, but I don't find it unethical to splice/edit logs.
