Thoughts on the World Championship

You obviously know a lot more about this than I do, but from my observation I think the main factor which have turned sponsors off are the ridiculously low attendance numbers. They have probably been promised a decent crowd and instead 45 people turn up. The problem is that the championship backgammon population is pretty small so you need to get a relative high percentage to participate to get a big tournament.

Anyway, World championship is one of the tournaments that have the potential to draw a big crowd, the combination of it being the wold championship, the timing (during summer) etc should make it possible to get sponsorship which in turn would attract bigger numbers. I am pretty confident that if someone could get a 100K added for championship (not a huge number imo) and promoted the event properly we would easily see numbers above 200 again in champ division.
