In Response To: A not-so-daily quiz (Kevin Whyte)

#1: 6/4 5/4 8/7. White is behind in the race anyway, so trying to fight blues back man seems logic. A 6 for blue is good anyway, slot or no slot, so 9/8 looks too soft. Alternative could be 9/7 8/7 5/4, but the 4-point is better than the barpoint.

#2: 21/20 8/4. I dont see anything else here.

#3: Difficult. Type of position where I often play my blunders, cause I dont know how to approach. If White were more behind in the race, hitting would be clear. If she were leading, 14/10 13/10 would be obvious. Here I'm not sure. Maybe with the cube in the middle and due to Jakoby, 14/10 8/5* is the best move. Blue cannot double from the bar and if he rolls strongly (like 51) followed by fan, he cannot go for a gammon due to Jakoby.

#4: 9/4(2) 6/1(2). Puts the most pressure on white's blots. Ok, if she rolls 22 I can still start whining. But a move like 21/6 13/8 looks to passive here: The back man on 24 will pay at the end.

#5: 13/7 6/5*. White's position is ugly, but she leads the race. So it seems obvious to start some quarrel here. Making the bar point looks very weak: White will escape in most cases and just play a race where her junk board is no problem anymore.
