Clearly the feed into the conso(s) can't be messed up that badly can it?

Certainly it can. Try designing a tournament schedule in which the 1st cons feeds into the 2nd cons, and you'll see the problem.

Anyhow I'd just pay the losers of the QF's and be done with them.

That's one reasonable solution. Presumably they felt that paying 18 places to a field of 138 was too many.

What to do with the losing quarterfinalists has always been an issue at Monte Carlo. Back in the day, they just fed directly to the last chance. If one considers this a bug (I do!), there are various approaches one can take to improve the situation. If you give them the same opportunity to flow through both consolation flights that everyone else got, they have a lot of rounds to play before the final day, and it eases the consolation schedule considerably to be able to spread those matches out over two days.

It's not as though playing two main flight matches in one day is a great hardship.
