Standing on the shoulders of Marshall McLuhan

Part of us is still standing in the Gutenberg Galaxis and McLuhan would have grinned about Jane Austen becoming a message in the medium. That is why bgonline is such a fine place to waste one’s time. Btw yesterday was the 100th birthday of the Marshall. M. Hickey pointed out, that in “Understanding Media” he suggests “a desperate need for games in a highly specialized industrial culture”. “Real interplay is reduced to nothing in a specialist world of delegated tasks and fragmented jobs..Men without art, and men without the popular arts of games, tend toward automatism.” (a.a.O. p. 7) And so Jane Austen is speaking to us. Backgammon could be an art, a chance, but exploiting the opponents via whopper could end in an “education sentimentale”.
