For any computer problems in the future I will always suggest google. It may take a little longer than if you had a magic genie to ask but the answer is always out there.

There are some minimum requirements for you to be able to run chat but from what you've said so far I can't imagine you not meeting them. (relatively modern browser and an operating system from the last 5 years)

You also need to be running a newer version of Yahoo mail. Check this post.

Lastly try this, in your Yahoo mail go to the dropdown menu New (top left) and what do you see there? If there's the option to chat try it and see if it opens.
