I think Yahoo chat uses Flash for doing updates. Possibly flash is corrupt. I'd recommend going to control panel, add/remove programs, and removing your current Flash. There may be a couple "Flash Player" entries like "Plugin" and "Active X" - remove both.

Then download and install: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

I'd reboot just to make sure everything is cleared out and starting fresh and see what happens.
