Shall you be talking about the way I want to calculate the variance, I don't want to make any assumptions actually. I just planned to use the simple var=(1/N-1)*SUM{ni*(xi-x_bar)^2} formula.
So far I can only see the constraint on the total probability as a must.

One could of course fit many different curves to given data, but I have no clue of curve fitting. I could just find a straight line so that the Sum of the errors squared is minimum, but again I'm sure Chuck already knows about it and also about my suggestion to use the "ranges".

Ah, yes! Actually as we are talking of discrete random variables, a curve fitting procedure makes little sense as we are looking for a probability mass function and not a probability density function. It's getting interesting...
