I also believe that a series of shorter matches requires more skill than one long match because the cube complexities are and checker plays become more complex at the various scores from 7A/7A down and there are far fewer complex decisions because of the score in a long match.
I think this is definitely true. When I sit down against a Giant, I know that I can get lucky, snag a gammon with the cube turned somewhere and I can easily win the match. If I have to win 2 out of 3 short matches, it feels like it's going to be a lot harder.
It may not be a huge difference, but there's a psychological component as well.
Here's a way to give weaker players a better chance...add a division. Make Giants and top-rated Open players play strictly in a Masters Division and let the rest of the Open Players play in the Open division. That will also give more of the players that were forced to move up from Intermediate more of a chance to cash.
It's good for those Intermediate types who were forced up, but it's a tough deal for people like me... I'd have to choose between the opportunity to play for the highest championship, or not being a dog in every match.
