Good problem. I think there are a few important pointers here:

1. The difference between leaving direct shots and indirect shots need not be big. Here the difference between 14/9 3/1 and leaving the blot where it is, is either 5 or 7 shots, depending on whether the 8 point is given up.

2. You are behind in the race and have a timing advantage, arguing for building and maintaining the board.

3. Black's 5 point is open and cannot be easily closed - if White is hit and enters immediately, he will do very well.

Based on this, 14/9 3/1 is clearly best, but it is easy to fall for the trap to avoid a direct shot.
