4 vs. 11 shots is exact, for the immediate shots, which I was comparing. You are certainly correct that future shots matter, too, and the "problem is nearer to repair" after 14/9 and that the "board is an asset" -- I did mention that 13/9 was a strong positional play, and the 5 point board, and that 14/9 3/1 "gives you a playable spare" and "if you're missed, does nearly solve the problem of bringing your blot home," right?
After 14/9 3/1 and a miss all your numbers play well and safely. But after 6/1 3/1 (and a miss), most numbers also play well -- only 5-2, 4-3 and 3-2 leave the indirect shot. And after 8/3 8/6 and a miss (you've left 6 instead of 4 immediate hits), 6-1 leaves a direct shot, and 5-2, 4-3, 4-2 and 3-2 again leave the 6 indirects.
Anyway, the choice appears to be close, and I think we've addressed all the main features. I'd guess Rory's blunder was clearing the 8 point, which keeps the board but increases immediate and future hits, and reduces your double-shot firepower should the opponent have to run from your bar point two or three turns from now.
