O.K., so you distinguish between what you think and what you think other people should think
I don't think that's exactly right. I distinguish between what I think and what I think other people think, not what I think they should think. They're free to think whatever the hell they want even if I think it's donkalicious.
How good does someone's record have to be for you to think that other people should think that it's more than mediocre?
This is a hard question to answer and again it's not that I think they should think it's more than mediocre, it's there's a line when I think they will. The best example is this thread. I believe, though could be entirely wrong, that Petch posted with the intent of showing how successful Fernando has been and it seems others thought the same as they replied in such a way. The bottom line is ...
He entered twenty tournaments since 2008 and according to what is reported here (I didn't cross check it) he cashed/did well in 6 events. This does little to tell us how many events he entered over all. The obvious lowest number would be 20 but I'm sure he entered many a 'jackpot' like event (as his results show he had to enter at least a couple). How many? I doubt anyone really knows, including Fernando. Let's say he entered 30 events overall and cashed in 6 of them. Do people think these are good results? I don't know, I know I don't, especially for someone with such a low online PR.
What's an example of somebody whose record is good enough that you think that other people should think it's more than mediocre?
Again this is hard to answer because nobody really has all the facts. I like all the facts, they represent a lot more than the bottom line shows when you look at Chicago Point and who cashed in what. I can use myself for an example here. One year, maybe two, not really sure, I entered the Super Jackpots in Vegas. At least one of the years that I cashed (split first) I entered directly into the round of 16. Nowhere will you ever see that and it should be weighed in accordingly. I had one less round to play than everyone else because I put up the money to do so. Does that or should that make the win less impressive? I think so .. and it's one of many like details that we don't consider.
Other factors include the draw. Taking Fernando in the Monte Carlo Open for example it was first noted that there were big names in the event, Falafel, Michy, and I can't even remember who else, but some good players. The first thing I checked was to see if Fernando ever had to play any of them because who cares how tough the overall field is if that person never runs in to any of them. (Fernando did play Michy in the finals) In this draw there were also 4 people who had an anti bye or extra round to play and he was not among them. Unlucky for them, lucky for him.
People often rebuy into tournaments giving them a much better shot of hitting that bottom line of 'look, I won this tourney!' and that is never noted in the results. You can ask me on a case by case basis but it's hard to have all the data at hand for me to decide what I think people should think, but it's easier to tell what they will think because they ignore a lot of these factors.
