Making the 20 pt and 9 pt here is basically a "next". You establish a 4 prime and good defensive position and have a variety of good game plans available over the next few turns, depending on dice.

The 20 pt basically cancels much of the value of the opp 4 pt and means that you'll lose fewer gammons. After that the 9 pt seems clearly better than the 4 pt or pointing.

The alternative of blitzing still leaves the opp with an easy take even if he dances since he has his 4 pt for counterplay and your two back men haven't moved.

Often it is best to safely bring more ammo to bear and the hope to attack.

20 and 9 also caters to being somewhat ahead in the race now.
