NEBC's variable side pools early 2000s

Back when I used to play at one-day events at NEBC, they solved the problem of extra work for the TD by "outsourcing" the variable side pools to a long-time member of the club who was a huge fan of side pools in general. He decided what the three amounts would be, collected the money, and made the payouts.
When you entered one of the side pools, you could see the listed names of the players already in it, which might help you make a decision regarding your equity. Of course, then other players who entered later could approximate their equity based on the previous names, plus yours. If you had a club full of ego-free equity-chasers, they might all wait forever for someone else to jump in the pools first, but they didn't and so that never happened. The smallest pool got a lot of action, and the highest pool would draw only 2-4 players, and everyone was happy with the system.
