Against a weaker player I'd make the anchor, for exactly the reasons you described. It is certainly the best move against gammons and to keep the match long.

On the other hand, the move looks strong anyway. What else can Blue play? 8/5 6/5 seems too bold (4 blots). Maybe 6/3 22/21. Looks also like a good move. But then the weaker player, if he is a maniac, doubles, rolls 44 and wins the match.
