Your sense that making the bar point increases the EPC seems right.

I had to take the rear checkers off in order to get a position my race program could handle, so the numbers below may not be completely valid, but here is the comparison.

After making the bar point:

Originally, my thought was that the difference between the two had been exaggerated. With runners to bring around,
X will have more opportunity to wait for a small number before bringing in his last checkers.

So I made another comparison. This time I put the two extra checkers on the 10 and 11 points.

After making the bar point:

Now the situation has worsened! A 0.07 difference is now 0.14.

As one of those who has advocated against putting checkers on the bar point in a race (see http://www.bgonline.org/forums/webbbs_config.pl?noframes;read=99362 ), I want to caution against overdoing things. The problem with having checkers on the bar point is that they might later land on the lower points of your board. The solution cannot be to put them there now! There are plenty of racing positions that are less than ideal, where the correct move is to put a checker on the bar point.
