If R wins at dmp then I think I'd prefer it for gs too. However, my recommendation stands to make the 5pt in all situations like an automaton if you aren't sure.

I can certainly go along with R at gammon save (as well as at dmp). I was mainly trying to make Kevin feel good about the merits of his play. :)

Assuming that R is best at both of those scores, then compared to B, I would think it must dominate more at dmp than at gammon save (taking the usual empirical 14:9 margin ratio into account). Put another way, it would be easier to tweak the position so that R is best at dmp and B is best at gammon save than the other way around.

I would choose R over P at either gammon save or dmp. In this position, playing P could be giving up a non-trivial amount of equity at dmp. (Not to disagree with your practical idea of making the 5pt when uncertain.)
