In case you did have more experience than me I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I didn't get more familiar with it.

I've played some, too. I'll share. I stopped at success or loss. Success was closing out 2 checkers. Oh, I also counted starting a bearoff with a 5 point board vs. 2 on the bar as a success. That happened twice in (B) and once in (C).

(A) I haven't tried your play 17/7 16/11*/6. I'll try some of those next.

(B) Udo's play 16/11*/1 13/8. Success in 19/20. This played easier than I had imagined it would.

(C) 16/11* 17/12 6/1*(2). Success in 17/20 + 18/20 + 19/20 = 54/60.

I think you must have been unlucky in your set of 36 of the switching play.

I kept track of how many moves it took to close out the checkers in case this is of any interest to anyone.

I thought that might be interesting, but didn't keep track, so I can't say which play took more moves. Now I think it's probably not too interesting, because of the variation -- when Opp keeps entering, the games can be long, when not, not.
