By 4-ply eval, the S/D margins of your three positions are:

    Position 1 [S D68]
    Position 2 [S D30]
    Position 3 [S=D]

In Position 1, the third checker piled on the 24pt compels Blue to split, both for distributional balance and because he can't be closed out. That explains the S/D margin narrowing by .038. When you conclude (under the second diagram) that "it doesn't seem to make much difference," I suspect that either you think it doesn't matter how much a play wins by (whereas it really does matter), or you are confused by the R play added to the first eval (the rivalry is between S and D).

In Position 3, Blue is 8 pips further behind than in Position 2. That's a gross oversimplification but a quick explanation for S losing another .030 versus D.
