Playing against 53P or 55P

I don't disagree - but I do have blue down 15 pip before their play, which is the same or close to difference in the various pair presented. Bringing a third man back makes the race longer, so the 15 pips are less as a percentage, and more importantly changes the nature of the position on a more strategic level.
So, I agree my examples suck - let me ask this: if, early in the game, you are behind in the race by roughly enough that you're at the boarderline take point if it were a straight race and neither side has much of a home board, is it almost always a mistake to split back men (assuming you still have the 24 point anchor)?
That's what I can't quite see - there are a bunch of example to show that sometimes it is a mistake, but some others where splitting is at least ok that make it unclear to me if this is really a general rule when behind in the race or if it has to do with other things. If it's just a claim that in very early positions after an early 55 you usually shouldn't split that's one thing - but I get the sense from the way people are talking that it has more general applicability. I'm not asking for a precise answer, but if you're a bit behind in the race early on and still own the 24-point, what goes in to a decision about whether to split?
