I have played chess players who fiddle ("adjust") their pieces constantly in an attempt to distract

Really? You have ppl saying "Adjust" or "J'adoube" all the time in tournament play?

I have played against poker players who act out of turn regularly to get a reaction

In most casinos/rules their out of turn action stands. I also don't agree with your overall view of poker players and the slimey shots they try to take at the table.

It only works against inexperienced and otherwise distracted players

And there is your argument. Some backgammon players think that it's your fault for being distracted. It's your fault for making the error. It's your fault for not knowing the score, trying to cube, being on top of your game, etc... They say/think that's part of the game.

I agree with you, I think it's as lame as Scarlett's basketball game, but that's their argument fwiw.
