If you are interested in a comment from a newcomer to backgammon, here it is (if not, stop reading).
Many of us are very interested.
gamesmanship ... unfriendly to new players ... lying to you or somehow playing an angle
There's very little of this in tournament backgammon. There isn't unanimity on what constitutes permissible "gamesmanship," but angle-shooting and deceit are actively discouraged.
1) Very few people would sink to doubling their opponents at, say, DMP just on the off chance they weren't paying attention.
Indeed, very few if any. They wouldn't get it away with it. They'd be spanked. The only question is how hard.
Has anyone defended doubling at DMP just because your opponent might drop?
Nobody I know of. Among current tournament directors, I think there would be unanimous agreement that a player knowingly doubling at DMP hoping his inexperienced or inattentive opponent would drop (this sounds ridiculous) would be given a serious warning, at the least. Repeated such conduct, well, we don't need these kinds of players in tournament.
By the way, see http://chicagopoint.com/calendar.html and http://chicagopoint.com/usaclubs.html#anchor1961985 for tournaments and clubs near you in Chicago.
