Nice and easy.
1/2 odds a place. If you place a bet on Team A to win at 3-1 odds, you can bet on them to place 2nd as well. So, you place two bets on Team A, both the same size, if they win you get 3xbet plus original bet placed, if they come in 2nd place, you get 1.5xbet plus original bet back.
Same with williamhill, just shown differently
Same with Ladbrokes - only its quarter odds, broken down. So if you bet on Horse A to place 1-4th, its actually only 2 bets, one to win, one to place. Depending on position is what odds you get on your return. If your horse is 8-1 to win, then coming second will give you 6-1, 3rd 4-1, 4th 2-1. You place a total of two bets on that, say $20 each, so you bet $40 total. If your horse comes in second you will get 6-1 on the $20 to place bet - $120 plus your original winning bet ($20), so a total of $140. However if it finishes 4th, then you get 2-1 - total $60 from your total bets of $40.
Naturally enough the odds will never be this stacked for you, unless you are betting on a 3 legged horse to win a race.
An Each Way bet is another way to call the above. You can also get 1/3 odds for first 3.
