So, when we do a GNUbg analysis, how do we decide that this was a position that merited questioning the bot's analysis?
You can ask yourself some questions.
(1) Is this the play you would have made?
(2) Are one or more other plays very close to the recommended play?
(3) Is this is a position the bot understands?
(4) For Gnubg (only?), do 3-ply and 4-ply agree on the recommended play?
For this position, (1) (depending) and (3) apply. Looking ahead 4 turns is great, but a human can see further. The bot sees a blot and thinks more gammons and backgammons! The human sees that the critical point in the game will come many more turns than 4 from now. If White is to have any chance of winning or saving the gammon, White has to use the spares on the 6, 3 and 2 to make a backwards 4-prime. The best way to prevent that from happening is to leave White alone now so White's position can crash.
