If this project is done then you'll be able to answer at least a question or maybe two that you included on your own.

That's not even a question, the answer is yes.

6. Why do the race formulas seem to be wrong so much of the time, and how can we know which formula to use when?

A race formula is a compromise between ease of use and accuracy, that's generally why they're flawed.
