An interesting question is what to do with a roll of 63 or 53 here instead of 61. I would be inclined to run the back checker despite the double shot.

I think you should only step up 23/20 and not step out into the double shot. The race is basically even after either of these rolls, no reason to hop out and get yourself drilled. Wait a roll then spring a checker hopefully without leaving any shots.
