Backgames almost always have some sort of volatility built in to them. The person playing the backgame seems to have a couple/few bad doublets that kill their timing and position. On top of that in this particular position we can clear a point which is okay but if we keep the mini prime and our opponent can't escape his rearmost checker that's a pretty big 1 ply swing as his forward position starts to crumble even on the most boring of rolls.
