Have you ever actually done this? To me it sounds like a nice theory but I'm skeptical unless I see it work out in practice.

No and mainly because .. how would that ever possibly happen in the real world? What I would need is a player who wants to become good at backgammon without ever really having played the game. That just can't happen. The closest thing someone might find is teaching their children but since I never plan on having kids that will be left for someone else to test.
