In Response To: Time handicapping (Mark Denihan)

As I think UBK (Koca) mentioned somewhere in this thread, it would be more advantageous to the weaker player if the stronger player was given less not and not if he, the weaker player, was given more.

I also agree with Ben that this game has more than enough of an equalizer in it in the form of dice. The fact that someone like myself can hope to win at most 65% of my matches is disgusting.

As to the time controls favoring the better player I think that is absolute horseshit. The time controls allow for ample reflection especially when you don't have that much to reflect upon. Take for example one of my latest posts.

I would love to take my time on many decisions like this OtB but due to time constraints I often have to skip thorough analysis like this and go with more of a gut feel or shortened analysis. What does this donkey weaker player have to do in these types of positions? Nothing. He stares blankly at the board giving the impression that he's thinking about something but has no clue what is going on. Finally, he impulsively decides to do this or that based on "Well shit, I'm really behind, let's double!"

Now, if you ramped up the settings to actual speed settings then I believe there is a point where it would definitely favor the stronger player. Take both extremes, a match with infinite time controls and a match where you could only play on the delay. I firmly believe (assuming nobody times out) that the latter favors the stronger player in a bigger way. Somewhere inbetween which is what we have will be best for the mediocre player. As someone said already, at the end of these matches it isn't the average player who is 'low on time'. They have all kinds of time left because they don't need it and they don't think about shit for that long. The better players are the ones struggling to fit the right amount of reflection into the magical time frame.
