Time handicapping

You misunderstand. I am not suggesting a spot, or compensation for greater knowledge. I am suggesting that time controls give the stronger player more of an advantage than h/she would have in an untimed match in which both players have time to complete all the analysis they wish to.

The better players higher expectation of winning would remain the same as in an untimed match, but any change in that expectation induced by time controls would be compensated for.

Read the whole thread. No one agrees but some think it is an interesting conjecture. And there has emerged a difference of opinion on whether speed of play has an effect on level of play, and if so, is that effect greater on the stronger or weaker player. Which no one will ever statistically test but will be happy to express an opinion or three.
