As hapless Colonel who luck-boxed his way to victory in this game, I want to thank HiGoneFive and all the posters here. This position comes from a match I played this month in Berkeley. I first posted it at: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/138/backgammon/cube-action-black-roll-virtual-dmp-1083990/
"This game took place Saturday, [August 13, 2011,] in Berkeley, where the "Backgammon by the Bay" club plays a monthly tournament. In a match to seven, the score was tied at five apiece. Before the game I said to myself, "This game is supposed be played with the cube at two. Double with smallest advantage." But somehow, I always felt the game was too close. Right up until I rolled a propitious double six, my opponent and I both had one man back, and very similar structures up front. After moving the sixes, [I had escaped, and filled in my five point all at once, and] I was playing for the gammon."
That quote comes from the introduction at the top of the page. You can see my analysis, along with three or four comparison positions, at the bottom. When HiGoneFive said he would like to hear what the experts might say at bgonline, I was eager to have him post it here.
Thanks again to HiGoneFive and to all the experts.
Mike
