1998 wasn't really pre-bot, because JellyFish had been out for years already and people had learned a lot from it. JellyFish would have creamed virtually anyone playing in true pre-bot style. And there were other bots: Snowie 2 came out in '98 I think, and there was TD-Gammon (which I think was about the caliber of JF) and mloner. These bots were playing on FIBS and GG, so you didn't have to buy anything to get quite a bit of exposure.
