Daily Quiz 8/29

1. Nice race, better board and structure. I double for sure. Can white take? Half-empty - The position is stiff and generally sucks. Half full – white has one back to two back and an undeveloped position with potential. Blue’s builders could turn into blots. I grumble and take. Double / Take

2. I play this up and down like a “normal” double 4. Advancing the anchor and unstacking the midpoint accomplishes two good things. Running all the way 24/16(2), though we are up the race, feels too stiff and wimpy. And the aggressive 13/5(2) feels like an overplay to me. It is true White’s offense isn’t too threatening but I like the balanced approach. 24/20(2), 13/9(2).

3. My attempt at Keith Count. White = 56 + 5 for wastage = 61 *1/7 ~ 70.

Blue = 66 + 2 for wastage = 68. Not counting the gap on the 6 point which will likely be filled. Appears to be a close decision for money. I don’t know what the takepoint is at this score. Assuming is similar to money – perhaps trailer can take a smidge deeper because he is significantly behind. I’ll guess Double / Take.

4. Nine in the zone but only a one-point board. Is this a score-based cube? Maybe. Point on head (likely) and white rolls a dud is very good sequence. Big doubles / no troubles is also great. Would want the cube in on those. White has absolutely no offense so even if things go sour, will be a long time before white is recubing at this score. Gammon would be sweet to get back into the match. OTB down 5-0 I say f** it. Go for it. Double / Take.

5. Don’t know the takepoint but assume it is close to money. White has to leave a shot, Blue must hit, and win from there. Maybe if we had the 5-point closed I’d give it a go but something about that open 5-point I don’t like. I let it go and fight with the leader still 2-away. Double / Pass.
