In Response To: Tournament Format and Prize Sharing By Dr. Garal (Phil Simborg)

Sorry, Phil, which part was supposed to be interesting and insightful?

Garal is still fixated on his idea that backgammon tournaments aren't "fair" unless everyone plays the same number of games. His "solution" is to have players play "matches" which are each a fixed number of money games. He's also a fan of his complicated "fair" scoring system. And of his "fair" payout structure which -- according to his example -- in a 32-player tournament would split only one-half the prize money among the top 8 finishers and the rest among all the players who hadn't lost their original stake (it's complicated). Then he chalks up all the supposed "advantages" of "fair backgammon" tournaments and claims, rather baldly, that they make not only for a better tournament for players, but will enable organizers to take a larger rake!

I paraphrase1: It is important to the backgammon community that experts win tournaments because experts decide who is in the biennial Giants List and the last one in 2009 only had two players in the top 32 who had ever won in Monte Carlo.

Does that make sense to you? Me neither. There are actually four former "world champions" in the 2009 Top 32, but whatever.

1 "Only 1 of 3 recipients (28%) has understood how important for BG-community to have their experts and other good players in the top of the rating table. Why? Because in the reality we have some kind of expert’s opinions who decide about the BG-giants every two years and offer us their estimations in form of 32 BG-Giants list of the World, and we have World Backgammon Championship in Monte Carlo the winner of which could be NOBODY! In the last 2009 list there were only two World Champions between 32 giants: Mochy (place 1– he won in 2009 WC) and double World Champion Bill Robertie (place 26). There are no other World Champions between 32 Giants!"
