First thought: TD is going to have a whale of a time sorting out rulings - it's hard enough when it's simply win-each-match-to-stay-in, the last thing he needs is to have a system so complex even a pro mathematician can't get it in the first reading. There's plenty of perverse incentives towards the end of the first stage for those near the top 8 - for example, play slowly to avoid losing too much when you're above the cut, and to see other players' results appear before yours so you know exactly what you have to achieve. Below the cut, you can collude with your opponent to ensure one of you makes it. And rebuys are an absolute no-no for me as they give an advantage to the players who have more cash they are able to invest.

And I don't see what the problem is that the lists of world champions and giants don't have many names in common. They represent different achievements; one a great performance over a week or so, one a sustained strong performance over years. It seems like an obsessive desire to single out "the best" when, in a game of chance, actually identifying a single best player from one tournament is not a reasonable task. Backgammon is not like tennis, or 1990's snooker, or any other sport where a handful of individuals are so far above the rest they dominate every event.
