Just to add - I think this makes Tim's argument stronger. If you penalize both Donald and Nellie equally for their blunders when they make them then Don comes out looking like a stronger player even though they split matches 50/50 in the long run.

The other side of the coin is that perhaps they are both equally likely to blunder at any given match score and Nellie just happened to do it early and Donald late. In that scenario you would be penalizing Donald for being unlucky and having the position he didn't understand come up at DMP.

Which scoring system is better depends a lot on which scenario seems more plausible to you. If both players have made equally large blunders in different games, one early and one late, is it more likely that the timing is random or that psychological quirks cause the score to irrationally affect their play? My gut would say the former, but I'd still prefer Tim's method - it removes most of the luck while keeping the competitive feel ( a straight error rate tournament would feel a bit like we could have all just played the bot at home ).
