Force him away: 8/2*/1 is a gambit that might force White to enter higher in our board. It risks only 11 shots, but does not address the problem of getting our rear checkers home safely. The hit is costly: Blue loses 24 pips.

Weigh anchor: 15/8 leaves 18 shots (any 3, 21, 44, 53, and 62). The extra shots are not as bad as they seem, for White cannot cover the blot on his 5pt when he hits using a combination. When hit in this variation, Blue loses only 10 pips. Furthermore, in order to hit, White must sacrifice one of his points. On the other hand, when the blot is missed, Blue is not out of the woods by a long shot.
