You asked me what luck is in backgammon, and I will tell you what I think it is:

Luck is when I look at the draw sheet and see Neil and Petko draw eachother in the first round and I got a bye.

Luck is when I get into a tough position that I would often get wrong, and just 10 minutes earlier Stick was telling me that you have to hit in a position like this, and I remembered.

Luck was the day I became friends with Perry Gartner and he showed me how to approach every backgammon decision is an organized, logical, and detailed way to make the best decision, and he continues to give me excellent advice about the game (and teaching).

Luck was the day Stick, John O'Hagan, and David Rockwell decided they would like to join with me and Perry in our teaching group--and I have learned more teaching with them in the past 2 years than in the previous 10 years.

Luck was when Stick told me to check out this forum, as it gives me the opportunity to see what many of the best minds in backgammon think and how they approach backgammon, and in spite of all the crap by some very negative people here who only want to pick personal fights of demonstrate their particular forms of neuroses instead of have a true, intellectual discussion, this is a wonderful "community" for all of us to share ideas.

But luck is NOT when I roll four double 6's in a row. That is what I am entitled to do once in a while because the odds say I will do that once in a while (maybe only once in a lifetime). And whenever my opponent rolls 3 double sixes in a row to beat me, I DO NOT CRY AND BLAME MY BAD LUCK--I know it was just my turn for the odds to go against me, and I wonder about what mistakes I might have made earlier in that game or previous games to give my opponent a chance to beat me this way.
