In Response To: Refute this argument, please (I know someone will!) (Phil Simborg)

I haven't finished reading all the comments in this thread, so someone may have already said this--but there is probably no substantial disagreement here among those taking various stands. This isn't a superstitious crowd, nor is it paranoid beyond the relatively low level that can be considered healthy. I see that nobody is taking you (Phil) up on your "predict the Gamesgrid dice" bet, and if you ever get anyone to do it, it's unlikely you'll find that person here at this forum.

AFAIS, the problem, if there is one, is in general how you define "luck", and more specifically, how do you define it in reference to statistical norms, "the odds", variance, and more arcane mathy stuff that I don't understand. If the definitions were clear, and the dots and lines weren't drawn fuzzy, everyone in this thread would probably have pulled their chairs into a circle and be singing Kumbaya by now.

Regarding not carrying a rabbit's foot: I don't blame you. When I was a kid, they were fashionable, and my friends and I all carried them, color-coordinated to the purses to which we attached them, of course. But we were all in agreement that they made lousy good-luck charms, considering what had happened to the rabbits! >>
