Trice's comments also pretty much state that parts of the formula weren't based on any mathematical premise. I'd be interested in seeing Larry Kaufmann's original article in Inside backgammon (Only part is quoted in Trice's book). To me it seems (reasonably clear) that part of the formula as it pertains to match length ended up being a hack that just happened to produce results that appeared to be usable.
