The FIBS rating formula : why sqrt(n) ?

In Response To: The FIBS rating formula : why sqrt(n) ? (Maik Stiebler)

That has the ring of rightness. In addition, one of the assumptions of the Elo formula is that every player's results follow a normal distribution (with the same variance). But I don't know much about the normal distribution, except the formula. Could you help me to plug the gaps ?
