After hitting in the left-hand position, Blue will be up 22 or 24 pips minus the roll, which is a typical sort of lead when hitting on the far side this early in the game. It is generally better to hit further into the opponent's outer board instead of on the 18pt, given the choice, in order to reduce the number of return shots (try to consolidate your racing lead). In fact, if memory serves, for ALL third roll positions of the type 6xS-x1D-6x or 6xS-6xD-6x (for money), it is slightly better to hit on the 16pt/15pt/14pt than on the 18pt.

If the after-the-hit race is closer, it can be better to hit on the 18pt. The 18pt is a favorable spot for an exchange of hits, after all. In the variant on the right (adding a 65R prelude for Opp, also reachable via 64R-63S-51H-63), the after-hit race lead is cut by 11 pips and I think the decision is basically a tossup.

I'm sure that at least some positions of the type 65R-6xS-6xH-6x reach over to the other side of the aisle. The after-hit lead is shaved by another 5 pips.

There are other ways to tweak the position, e.g. strengthening the prime and or inner board for one side or the other (or both), but I assume you primarily mean to address undeveloped positions.
