The Magriel criteria are especially useful in a decision like this in which you look at different ways to implement the same game plan (here run the checker home, build a structure, capitalize on the race lead) and you need to decide whether to implement with a more risky or less risky move.

If there are different game plans, e.g. involving a choice between prime and blitz as in a recent post of Chuck, the criteria lose some of their value.
