I remember when I first looked at these pointless doubles when behind in the race by differing amounts. One factor that surprised me initially is that in general the gammons won by the doubler are higher than I think most would expect. Here we have a situation where the race is pretty hopeless, there are no immediate bad/direct shot leaving numbers and there aren't likely to be. So what are we banking on to win this game? Indirect shot equity which there will of course be a few of but won't out right win the game even when they are hit and a race that is poor at best.
