One factor that surprised me initially is that in general the gammons won by the doubler are higher than I think most would expect.

Yes, that seems important. And

Indirect shot equity which there will of course be a few of but won't out right win the game

too, because White's board is so unprepared, a feature that helps make this "pointless" double so clear.
